Backyard Produce in North Carolina

Backyard Produce

I just came across an organic produce delivery service called Backyard Produce. They  deliver fresh produce to triangle residents every Wednesday. You can choose a small, medium, or large “basket” of food, and a lot of the items are grown in North Carolina. It looks like a fantastic program. They have a Groupon today that is $18 for $36 worth of organic produce. I’m not sure if I should sign up, just because I’m not sure that I normally spend that much on fruit and veggies weekly. Maybe if I was buying for more than one eater, I would be more inclined to do this. Also, I can be very “spur of the moment” when deciding on what to cook, and what if I’ve ordered too much kale and no tomatoes or something? I would have to make another trip to the store. Has anyone ever tried a service like this? I would love to hear feedback on this group or a similar one you have tried.

Veggie Week at Capital Club 16

Capital Club 16 Veggie WeekFor any veggies in the Raleigh area who might want to try some new fine dining, Capital Club 16 is currently having “Veggie Week.” That means that in addition to their regular menu, they are adding daily vegetarian and vegan specials. I love this idea, I just hope it generates enough interest that they will make some permanent veg additions to the menu. One week out of 52 is not enough!

I’ve never been to Capital Club 16, but Friday night’s vegan special – Vegetable Chili over Stone ground grits cakes topped with house guacamole – is calling my name. Anyone want to go?

Capital Club 16 is located in downtown Raleigh at 16 West Martin Street.

Vegan Pizza from Mellow Mushroom

Vegan Pizza

Vegan Pizza from Mellow Mushroom in Wake Forest

I forgot to brown-bag it for lunch today, so I decided to treat myself to a pizza from Mellow Mushroom. I used to looooove their Avocado Hoagie with provolone, mayo, and sprouts. And their cinnamon sugar pretzels are to die for. When I went veeg, I was surprised to learn that they have vegan cheese available on their “build-your-own” salads and pizzas. I called in a takeout order today and got a pizza with red sauce, vegan mozzarella (they use Daiya brand cheese), sun-dried tomatoes, onions, and fresh basil. Kyle, who answered my call, asked me if I was lactose-intolerant, because if I was, they would leave off the butter and parmesan they put on all their crusts. Wow, way to be on the ball, Kyle! Thank you for saving me from that stomachache. My pizza was delicious! And huge! It will probably last me three more meals. Mmmmm…
