Branding “Trivia Night with Andy”

AKA the Best Type of Unpaid Design Work

My wonderful husband Andy and I are trivia fanatics. We watch trivia shows (The Floor is a current favorite) and we’ve played pub trivia weekly for more than a decade.

During the COVID pandemic, much of that disappeared or went on hiatus. To keep from going stir crazy, Andy started hosting a weekly trivia game on Zoom.

Once people got vaxxed and returned to the world, Andy approached a local brewery and got a weekly trivia hosting gig. This new side hustle gave me a new design outlet and a job with graphic design’s holy grail, TOTAL CREATIVE FREEDOM.

I had about a week to design a flyer promoting trivia night for the brewery. Andy’s trivia game spans a wide range of knowledge, and he wanted to communicate that to players who might shy away from certain topics. It’s often as silly as it is challenging.

I chose an obvious composite style featuring anachronistic imagery to convey the breadth of topics, the depth of knowledge, and with a dash of fun thrown in. Here is the first official flyer for Trivia Night with Andy:

Trivia Night with Andy. 7PM Monday January 10th. Win Prizes Learn Stuff Have Fun. Big Boss Brewing Co. 1249 Wicker Drive
Fun fact: Gandhi is jamming out to Young MC's 1989 album "Stone Cold Rhymin'"

This flyer was so much fun to design that I developed new concepts each week. I loved combining disparate subject matter like Marie Antoinette clutching a Teletubby, Shakespeare sitting beside a lava lamp, and Galileo holding a singing novelty bass. Here are some of my favorites:

Branching out with Business Cards and More

Sadly, the brewery that originally hired Andy shut down in 2023, but he found a new gig at a restaurant and is now on his second year of Monday night trivia there.

With the change in venue, we spruced up the branding. I made a proper logo, new flyers, and launched a website, trivia-andy.com.

I had previously used MOO for business cards, so I knew about their Printfinity feature, which allows you to print a different design on every card at no extra cost. This was the perfect option for trivia themed business cards; we printed different questions on each card.

If you think this is cool as hell (because it is), feel free to use my affiliate link to get 25% off when you design your own set of cards.
